Good read. Wife and I were just talking about this whole concept of “everyone should get a fair shot” and we should “level the playing field.” While I support the ideal of human equality….”a level playing field” just isn’t how the world works. And focusing too much on “fair shots” is absolutely the wrong thing. This is a hard concept to accept – but it is how the world works. At its most basic level – its Darwinism.
Great people (and great kids) are created/formed when they overcome adversity.
We are not all given an equal chance. We come from different backgrounds.
Overcoming “our inequality” is what makes us individual and, in some cases, what makes us great.
All of the great minds were frought with inequality.
John Milton was blind.
Beethoven was deaf.
Pretty much everyone was poor, malnutritioned and sick…..but they still became great artists, inventors, writers composers, leaders, etc.
I’m not in the “great” category by any means…in fact, I’m in the “less” category right now…but statistics and the “unlevel playing field” should not have allowed me, a working-class hispanic in South Texas…to become CEO of a successful software startup in California.
Everyone has a fair shot. It’s what you do with it.
